What to see in Akko, Israel

There is no translation available.

Napoleon besieged Akko for 61 days and had no success! The emperor wasn’t used to failures. He threw his hat into the sea and proclaimed: "Whoever conquers Akko, conquers the world!" — and left, leaving his cannons, which still stand on the walls. Learn more! The city with an ancient history

Akko has been continuously inhabited since 2000 BC! Its history is full of events that influenced the country’s destiny greatly. The ancient fortress in Galilee on the Mediterranean coast was an important port city and a successful trading place. The city experienced Greek, Judean, Roman, Islamic, Christian, Ottoman and British periods.

Akko is an outstanding monument of the crusader epoch. There are many things that remind of knights. Their old fortress is preserved. The refectory and underground halls are well-restored and deserve attention. Crusaders built a network of arched tunnels underground; they have no analogs in the country. Today, the Old City of Akko is a center of tourism, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Conquerors and priests

Representatives of various religions, countries, and centuries left their mark on this wonderful city. Not just Napoleon paid a visit to the port. For thousands of years, many historical figures have been here:

  • Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra conquered Akko;
  • King Herod the Great used the port for military purposes;
  • Richard the Lionheart victoriously arrived in the city on the Third Crusade;
  • Paul the Apostle brought the commandments;
  • Saint Francis of Assisi constructed a Franciscan monastery here, which still stands to this day;
  • Moshe Maimonides, a famous Jewish philosopher and physician, and Moshe Luzzatto, a revered rabbi and kabbalist, visited this historical place.

Akko fascinates with a unique fortress wall and a spectacular sea view. A large number of architectural monuments have remained practically intact – fortresses and castles, impressive synagogues, splendid churches, and enormous mosques. These are the famous Hospitaller fortress, the white Al-Jazzar Mosque, hammam and aqueduct of the Ottoman Empire times, the Templars' Tunnel.

Akko has many faces

In the evening light, the old city walls shine in gold over the Mediterranean Sea. Boys jump into the water from the city walls. Life is in full swing everywhere – in the maze of small streets, in colorful oriental markets, in the Mediterranean harbor. The port attracts people, especially the fishing one. Fresh seafood is delivered here daily. In the evening, you can taste fabulous fish dishes at one of the numerous local restaurants. Among the best ones in Israel is the "Uri Buri" fish restaurant.

Akko is blessed with fine weather almost all year round. Water sports are popular on one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.
