There is no translation available.

Discover the diversity and beauty of the northern coast of Israel with the 123 Trip Tel Aviv travel company! You will be amazed by Roman ruins and Crusaders’ fortresses in Caesarea – a very important historical city in Israel. White chalk caves Rosh HaNikra, the gleaming terraces of the Bahai Gardens in Haifa, and Christian shrines in Galilee will also make a lasting impression. The trip will definitely become a wonderful and unforgettable adventure for you.

Ancient history

Caesarea Maritima is located halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, on the Mediterranean coast. The city is built on the site of an ancient Phoenician fortress, which was awarded to King Herod by Roman emperor Julius Caesar Augustus.

Caesarea was the provincial capital of Roman Judea, the official residence of Roman Procurators and the Herodian Dynasty. It was an important and luxurious settlement:

  • large commercial port;
  • harbor with breakwaters of huge boulders;
  • aqueduct with water from the springs at the foot of Mount Carmel;
  • public buildings;
  • amphitheater, hippodrome, baths, castles, temples.

Pontius Pilate lived here in the times of Jesus. This is evidenced by a stone with the prefect’s name, which has been preserved since Roman times.

Attractions and relaxation

A semicircle Roman amphitheater is well preserved. It’s restored and now used to hold events against the majestic scenery of the Mediterranean Sea. You can see ancient structures in the port. Not far from the harbor, there are the ruins of an enormous hippodrome where races and sporting events used to be held. Explore the aqueduct and pay attention to colorful mosaic floors in Roman ruins, which are in excellent condition. We recommend you watch a short multimedia film about the history of Caesarea by the port.

Many centuries later, crusaders also left impressive structures here: a 12th-century city gate and massive walls. The most fearless tourists can see the underground part of the ruins while diving into the sea.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Israel is in the immediate vicinity. The promenade invites you to take a stroll at sunset when the red radiant sun sinks in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
